The Leadership Institute was established in 2000 as a Private Company Limited by Guarantee (Company No. 3991078) in the United Kingdom, and as a Charity registered under the Charities Act (Charity No. 1084198).

The formal Purpose is to advance the education of the Anglican Communion worldwide through the provision of courses in leadership and Christian management
education for the more effective promulgation of religion among Anglican congregation and the wider community. The company may collaborate with other bodies, whether charitable of non-charitable for the provision of Christian management services and the furtherance of its objects.
